The separator is a sheet of material that insulates and separates the cathode and anode within a battery while ensuring ionic conductivity at the same time. Separators are usually made from polyethylene, and are relatively easy to produce compared to electrodes, which require rare metals, or electrolytes, which require sophisticated chemical plants for production. However, various characteristics are required of the separator depending on the specifications of the battery in which it will be used, which is why manufacturing know-how is vital to producing them successfully.
